Why The Plantage?
The Plantage has been dedicated to providing the finest plant material for over 35 years. We have been family owned and operated since Lois Woodhull founded the company in 1973. We have a firmly established reputation for knowledgeable and helpful customer service, and our product is recognized for its superiority. We were voted Grower of the Year in 2004 and are devoted to maintaining our standard of excellence. Even our competitors admit that each year, we raise the bar.
We offer the largest selection in the region: over 1,400 varieties! Our inventory includes rare and hard to find plants, as well as the tried-and-true varieties. Each year new additions are made to our catalog. When selecting new plants, we research and seek out plants that have been improved (more disease resistant, truer color, etc.), to provide you with the best looking, most robust end product. We utilize our experience to sort through the hype and offer plant selections that deserve a place in the landscape.
Our Soil Mix:
The Plantage's soil mix has traditionally contained a specially formulated blend of soil components, including various nutrients that will sustain each plant for a growing season. Our special blend has been specifically developed to provide you and your customers with the best plant possible. Our end product requires less watering and care at your garden center. Our slightly heavier soil means a more stable pot that's less likely to tip or blow over. Our potting soil makes it easier for each plant to acclimate to its new home and survive the winter.
The Plantage offers color labels complete with large, high resolution photographs and detailed descriptions that include planting instructions and cultural information. Our color labels can be customized with your company logo and pricing at no extra charge.
Our Knowledgeable Staff:
Our staff of CNLP's (Certified Nursery & Landscape Professionals) stand ready to help. Our employees are gardening enthusiasts who have been in the industry for years, and are always happy to answer questions, and suggest comparable substitutions for your landscaping projects.
The Plantage is always on the lookout for the next big thing, and occasionally it pops up right before our very eyes. We have discovered and introduced several new plant varieties that have gone on to become top sellers! Our Coreopsis 'Créme Brulee', found growing in the private gardens of Lois Woodhull, has gone on to become a staple variety of tickseed. Other introductions include Festuca 'Elijah Blue' which won an international award, Cortaderia s. p. 'Icalma', and several varieties of iris, including 'Moriah', 'White Caps',''Song of Praise'.
The Plantage is known for its dedication to bettering the horticultural industry. We make time for tours of our nursery and lectures at various venues. We support numerous trade organizations such as NY Farm Bureau, LIFG, Metro Hort, PPA, and LINLA, where Plantage President June Croon serves as a board member. We also provide funds necessary for research and development within the industry, and we have partnered with Scott's and Cornell Cooperative Extension for trials and experiments that are conducted at our nursery.
